IMAGINATION IN MOTION: PSYCHODRAMA FOR PEOPLE WITH MOBILITY IMPAIRMENT
Presenter: Dr. Daniela Simmons, PhD, TEP

Learning Objectives:
After attending this workshop, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the alternative action methods presented that could be applied among the physically impaired population;
2. Apply the alternative action methods appropriate for use among the physically impaired population.

This Workshop aims to present methodology for offering psychodrama to people with mobility impairment – inherited or acquired through accident, illness or with age problems.
Applying action methods among the physically impaired population can be considered difficult or impossible; therefore, this large diverse group is often excluded from the benefits of the powerful method of psychodrama. The author of this workshop believes that psychodrama and sociometry have a lot to offer to people with a mobility impairment, with the help of props, imagination and unique adaptations of the method. Integrating JL and Zerka Moreno’s invitation for laughter and creativity, this high energy workshop will include music, dance, play, sociometry and psychodrama vignettes to demonstrate how role reversal, double, surplus reality, locogram, spectrogram, sociogram, etc. can be successfully applied and fully experienced by the elderly, veterans, children and people with congenital or acquired impairments. The creativity of the director and the richness of the method can offer alternative ways to overcome the physical limitations.
One of J.L.Moreno’s definitions on psychodrama is that it is a “human society in miniature” (J.L.Moreno, 1937, p. 9). People with mobility impairment are a specifically diverse group of our society and creating a space for their culture in the safe environment of a small group is a healing experience in itself (e.g. allowing everyone to share their personal story, feelings, challenges, etc.). Often times, telling and hearing personal stories, the group members would easily discover a topic that connects them in their social and cultural roles and the group would benefit from a sociodrama.

Deniz Altinay (Turkey) Workshop – English – Turkish Moreno’s unique genius has given us the “Psychodrama Group Psychotherapy and Sociometry System” as a great gift. This system is crowned by “theory of role” and “sociometry theory”. Also the “spontaneity theory of child development” adds a deep understanding. Understanding the role within this system has a […]
