Magdalene Jeyrathnam



Magdalene Jeyarathnam is a certified Psychodramatist and Expressive arts therapist from India, she is the founder director of East West Center for Counselling and Training (EWC) which is the first Expressive Arts therapy center in the country and she is also the founder and director of Indian Institute of Psychodrama (IIP) which is the first formal institute teaching psychodrama in India. She is also on the board of directors of the International Association of Group Therapy and Group Process(IAGP) since 2018. Magdalene completes 25 years as a therapist in India in September 2019 and she has worked with major issues like substance abuse for 7 years, HIV/AIDS for 7 years and has worked with thousands of clients, couples and families directly during these years. She has worked with vulnerable populations like sex workers, transgendered people, truck drivers, People living with HIV for many years and more recently with young male prisioners. She has worked as a consultant to Ministries of health in several countries in South East Asia like - Bhutan, Myanmar, Thailand. She has worked as short term consultant for WHO on several occasions before being appointed as the counselling consultant for the state of Tamil Nadu, India; which at that time had the highest incidence of HIV/AIDS in the country. Subsequently she was also on the expert panel of counsellors for India planning policies and on the action team to work on bringing the level of HIV/AIDS incidents in India to below 1%. Currently, she is in the process of bringing qualified and trained psychodramatists and Expressive Arts therapists into India to provide training to work with those who cannot go out of India to qualify for either of the other programmes . She runs a two year Post graduate psychodrama programme in collaboration with a university in India and a one year post graduate programme in Expressive Arts therapy with another university.
