Presenter: Dr. Daniela Simmons, PhD, TEP
After attending this workshop, participants will be able to:
1. Describe Moreno’s social atom as a treatment tool for clients with eating disorders;
2. Apply the social atom on paper and in action for exploring various relationships of clients with eating disorders.
This Workshop aims to present how Moreno’s social atom can be applied as an instrument in the treatment of eating disorders. Social atom applications for exploring the client’s relationships with family, friends, their emotions and self-esteem in the present situation; the food and the eating disorder treatment process will be explored.
The Magic Mirror is a mystical object that is featured in the story of Snow White, a 19th-century German fairy tale, first published by the Brothers Grimm. A famous question from the story, “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest one of all?” will be applied as a metaphor of one of the main triggers in eating disorder recovery – seeing self as a negative or distorted body image.
J.L.Moreno created and introduced the social atom in 1934 in his book, Who Shall Survive? As a relational map, the social atom will be demonstrated as an instrument for the treatment and exploration of eating disorders, repairing the client’s relationships and promoting self-awareness and change.
